ULO (Ultra Low Oxygen) and CA (Controlled Atmosphere) storage make it possible to control the environment products are kept in. Inside a gas-tight refrigeration cell, oxygen levels are lowered (sometimes below 1%) while CO2 is increased, and temperature and humidity are adjusted to suit the product. This slows down ripening and extends shelf life.
Why Salco gas-tight doors
A controlled atmosphere depends on a door that seals completely. Salco offers two ways to achieve this, depending on requirements and budget.
The inflatable door rubber
The KHG and KDG doors use Salco's patented inflatable door rubber system. Once the door closes, the door rubber inflates and presses against the frame, creating a fully airtight seal.
A more economical option
The NI door achieves the same gas-tight result without the inflatable mechanism. Instead, the door is pressed into double rubber seals solely by its clamps.
Construction and design
The door leaf is made from high-quality, seamless polyester, keeping it lightweight, and is available in various colours. The frame and surround are fully thermal-bridge-free and made of anodised aluminium. Doors are available as horizontal sliding, vertical sliding, and swing versions.
Since the floor connection is the most critical point for any seal, both versions feature a semi-circular (radius) profile in the bottom corners, where the frame meets the floor. No Vaseline or sealant is needed, so the cell can be opened and resealed gas-tight in seconds, and everything stays clean.
Applications
Salco's gas-tight doors and windows are used across a range of different applications, each relying on the same principle of removing or reducing oxygen.
Fruit and vegetable storage and ripening
CA/ULO technology creates a low-oxygen, high-CO2 atmosphere that allows fruit and vegetables to be stored for months and ripened under controlled conditions.
Fire prevention
Removing oxygen from a room eliminates the risk of fire. This method is used in cold stores, server rooms and museums.
Pest control
Lowering oxygen levels to a point where insects can no longer survive offers a natural, organic form of pest control.
